ICANN or, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is planning to allow organizations globally to apply for the right to operate a new gTLD registry of their choosing and introduce it to for use on the world wide web. They are expecting between 300 to 1000 new gTLD applications. There are already 100 groups who have declared intentions to apply (list) and there are probably hundreds more with plans to apply but remain in stealth mode.
With ICANN’s new top level domain program about to be unleashed, companies all over the world will finally have a unique opportunity. They will be able to have their brand names or trademarks become top level domains over which they have exclusive control. Traditional top level domains (such as dot com) and even country codes will no longer be necessary. Instead, your company’s brand name can now be your Internet address.
